Producing products that help farmers and benefit consumers
CropLife Australia member companies produce the majority of the crop protection and crop biotechnology products used by Australian primary producers. These products protect crops and other plants from pests and diseases and help control weeds.
The products of CropLife Australia member companies help Australia’s agricultural industries produce safe, high quality, affordable and abundant food and fibre. They also help farmers increase yields so that their produce is more competitive on world markets.
Crop protection products are also used to protect public health through the control of weeds and pests.
Extensively tested and regulated
Before a crop protection product can be supplied, sold or used in Australia it must be registered by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority. Registration of a product involves rigorous scientific assessment aimed at ensuring that when used in accordance with the label, it works, is safe and has been manufactured to high quality standards.
Once a product has been sold, state and territory governments regulate its safe use. State and territory regulations cover basic training requirements for users and licensing of commercial operators.
Before an agricultural biotechnology product, alternatively known as a GM crop, is available for use in research or commercial applications, it undergoes a comprehensive risk assessment by the Gene Technology Regulator. This assessment aims to identify any risks that the GM crop may pose to human health and the environment.
